Roger played 17 years primarily for the Giants and Cardinals in the dead ball era. He is credited with designing and wearing the first batting helmet and also was the first catcher to wear shin guards. He was an oddity in that he possessed superior speed for a catcher and often batted lead off. He is the only catcher to hit 2 inside the park home runs in a game while hitting in the lead off spot in MLB history.
